Weeooo!
been reading a lot of Kris Straub‘s stuff recently. I meant to read through all his Starslips to see if I REALLLLLLY wanted to just buy them all the books at once (I’m determined to contribute some money for his work). But I’m currently distracted reading through all his Checkerboard stuff. which is pretty old. and not that hot. but I can’t stop reading. because I adore his joke style, when it peeks out. so for now, it’s just a huge time burn burn burn.

kind of blown away by how cool that guy is. recording music, drawing funny strips, drawing sci fi strips, making blamimations. And apparently he used to make strips about seeking fame (checkerboard nightmare) and created a horror/terror short story collective around a fictional east coast town as a tribute to hp lovecraft.

Basically, I find myself thinking: He is doing, or has done, everything I’m interested in. YEAAHHHHH!
Except lame flash video games. as far as I know. well. Hmm. HMM!
yoinks. I need to get to work!

whew. Maybe some other time I’ll devote my entire comic’s blog to describing how great some other more-talented fellow’s work is. keep your finger’s crossed, true believers…
(talking to an imaginary audience, in stan lee voice, makes me smile. because of the childish insanity).

It is really easiest to just babble on and on about what I’m shooting for in these strips. Like a public work diary. or, like reading my power point bullets aloud to a bored auditorium. Feels pretty lame…
Plus some dickhead friend of mine just commented on facebook (with regard to these strips): “I don’t get it.”
This being so vague a comment that i’m not sure if it’s meant to just be a mean-spirited jab at my abilities, or is just an honestly confused question. Perhaps it was a light hearted ribbing about the lack of jokes and punch lines in these puppies. Will we ever know?
(“we” being, in my mind, moi and the web strip here. which are my only real friend).

Well, I figured I should start better separating out this tendency to over-explain-what’s-happening, with a small section header like:

nail-on head:
So, we’re transitioning back to the 2 dudes storyline. The idea here was to imply maybe the weird white rain buried them. Or maybe things got much worse after we left them. Or maybe they’ve been having adventures underground.

the other point was to establish that they’re very close to the city. In their last sequence I started with the city several miles away, then promptly forgot to keep drawing it. At one point i thought the thick rain clouds might explain this. but. now I feel like I failed. Should probably go back and sneak in a few hints of skyline, for continuity. … not sure.

- originally I drew a very detailed city skyline, and it grazed the tops of the fingers in the final frame. thus, it felt pretty damed big. and close by. Then I found that I couldn’t remember what photoshop filter I was using in this storyline (photocopy, i eventually remembered), so I tried applying a charcoal filter. And while it kind of ruined all the detailed windows and debris, it looked neato. soo. I shrunk the city almost in half and crammed it at the top of the frame.

- maybe I should go in and draw some dissipating rain clouds over the city, to suggest it is only now being revealed, but was closeby for some time now… I suppose I won’t overthinking and all that. I assume people will glance at this strip and in about a tenth of a second they’ll look away and think “a hand. ok, what’s next.” hmmf.

need a better system than “in the middle of rambling blog posts” to keep track of all these minor revision notes. hmm. but what?
