hmm. Might have missed a bit on the art style here… Just now occurs to me. eek. (Actually, it bothered me enough that I just went back and fixed it a bit. Click here to see the old “Borderlands art-style” dad).
Um. Well, this strip was rewritten many times. originally it had dad busy working, and timmy interrupting to say “i’m sure we’re not alone in here.” but that’s such a vague statement. and clumsy exposition. blah blah. I thought it better to tie it in with the idea that the dad wants his son to spend time with him, working on science. awww. plus, i think this is much better at quickly settling “neither of us got veronica pregnant.” In my mind, the kid is saying “do you really think this is secure?” and the father is answering “no, but i’ve been working on a solution all day. way ahead of you, kiddo.”
dunno if that all comes across. hmm.
Anywho. Maybe bulkhead isn’t the proper word. I just meant a heavily fortified wall. Not that they’re on a ship or submarine. Though I guess it doesn’t hurt to have this false impression. Maybe the kid thinks that’s exactly where they are. it seems like an acceptable ambiguity.
I really like the idea of “a desicclazer”. Really just a quick random mashup of cool sounding words. Which suggest to me that it’s some sort of lazer that desiccates. If you say it out loud, you might think of glazing the victim. Anywho. You’ll see it later on. So I guess I shouldn’t go into it just now in too much detail.
For the final shot, I wanted to break from the fairly flat head level angles I’ve been doing, and go with a distant diagonal – as if a security camera is watching them. Recently I’ve watched several movies where this angle instantly makes me think someone is watching the characters. Not that this is what’s happening in the reality of the story. I just think it works as a device to pull you out of the interaction and distance you from the characters. hmm.
uh. anwyho. blah blah. typing too much here.
Upgraded my installation of wordpress last night. Which led to tons of headaches and problems and corrupted files. I think it’s all sorted out now. nightmare.
This left me a little behind on preparing strips. (and tonight i’ve had a new mini-nightmare around youtube claiming a video I uploaded is using copyrighted music in a school project. It won’t tell me what the song WMG is claiming I infringed. very frustrating).
… I guess I’ll rant more tomorrow (maybe with LESS words, but MORE interesting and focused)
