This one is maybe hard to see… It is a bird’s eye view, looking straight down. We are seeing recent footprints, which are passing by trash. A teddy bear in the middle frame.
Just setting the mood of “an epic bit of walking.” I was thinking you could something about mysterious strangers, who are just walking – by showing what they walk past. The last strip was them passing a plant. To me this mean “ain’t gonna be no story about replanting this wasteland. no sir.” This one, walking past trashed toys, says to me that children got caught up in whatever made this wastland. ie, it may not be a pretty world these two live in.
… In theory the teddy bear pays off later. But really, it’s more of a “jar jar’s tongue in the particle beam sets up the numbing effects of that special effect – just so it can be referenced for a couple seconds during the city car chase in episode 2″ sort of payoff, rather than a “really rewarding in any way” sort of payoff.
