INsights: Honestly, I was just tired.I’d planned a quick (almost actually funny!) strip while playing scattergories with friends. But it required Viddy, and some original art. And i let it get too late at night. sooooo. poop. I pondered how to yet again reuse the art i have, to minimize time sink. Decided to go with focusing on the notion of “reusing” itself. Because it does work. Damn you. Damn you for being tired of Disky.
Art wise, this is the eyeball from last week, and the military-ish beret and medal from before that (reused/repurposed). For the third frame, i’d planned to have Disky exploding with line art gore, as a nod to his birth in vector form. But a few simple filters in Illustrator, and some white mouse tweaking, made a pleasingly distorted figure. Meant to be a tribute to the first line art version of Disky (but the actual art from that strip was too horribly amateurish for me to reuse directly). The choice of which images to repeat is where the strip finds its abstract soul. The selections, sequencing, and resulting comparisons - are all quite personal. Trust me.
Word wise…. i dunno. pretty obvious. Not much there? i mean, repetition is key to a lot of comedy. It just puts you at ease, and makes “the puzzle” of the joke easier to latch on to. It’s a simpler man’s comedy device. … Really i just love the idea of a peice of art telling it’s audience “I defy you”. love it. Oh, and the symbols atop the third panel are just the words “Repetition Works” displayed in a stupid useless font. of love.
In a way this is just a strip for Garrett (a friend) who has expressed some dissatisfaction with the new line art style, and noted looking forward to Viddy’s return. I sense the last thing he wants is more of Disky sitting around not doing much. In a way, this strip is skipping the proper strip content, and jumping right in at the point where the strip needs to defendd itself from his (expected) criticism. This is weird and appeals to me.
It is sad that i pursue this strange to attack on my friend/audience, because i don’t think he’ll dig it. Of course the strip is also a short term memory inside joke. For anyone that can click back a few times to see the strips it is lifting from. hmm. Perhaps it fails for not applying a more obvious importance to each lifted bit of business. hmm.
it’s business time.
