INsights: Disky shouldn’t have messed with symbols, I guess.
zo. I finally sat down and redid the strip in Illustrator. woo hoo!
After several hours of, well, bullshit – There was no energy left to consider adapting some old shitty script. Sooo, you lose, readers! You just get to see a bit of the process of reimagining existing poop in new medium, with some bullshit nonsensical text tossed on top! AND YOU LIKE IT. Vector art replaces painted art. wee. IS IT NOT EXCITING?
woof. What a pain in the rear. While the layout, and Disky redesign, seem settled, I’m sure i’ll be tweaking them as time goes on. I dig having some more details and wrinkles in filthy old Disky. I kind of dig the new logo font, just because I put some time into creating it (the old font was basically stolen from some free font website back in 2003, and I have no idea what it was or how to find it again). It seemed like putting “the End” after each strip was just a waste of space.
Of course, after shrinking the strip down, i realized my credit (top left gibberish) isn’t remotely legible. will have to tweak that. And I didn’t spend any time revamping Viddy (or Filmy, or a new character i’ve been meaning to introduce for awhile, called Dr.Venti). Sooo, more painful bullshit work awaits when i sit down to make friday’s strip (no doubt at 11:59pm).
Um. Tangent? ok. sooo.
Word wise, he’s babbling about being reborn. I wrote a bunch of versions at the end, trying to draw some correllation to being born again in christ, and wondering if such a process turns you into a bastard. But none were funny. So i just tweaked the rhetoric down to avoid directly giving tribute to judeo-christianity (and to avoid attacking it). Wasn’t interested in making any religious statement. Just wanted to reinforce the rebirth. For some reason i really want to go back and change it to read “eyezies!” and “Chreyzt (or “Crysext”). but i can’t think of a really good reason for either word tweak. so to hell with that! … For some reason I put a dot under the “e” in “Chreyst”, thinking it could connotate the exclamation point in the E! entertainment logo. fail.
Art Wise, I really started at frame 3, then regressed it (poorly. ugh) for the first two frames. Then polished it off for the final frame. I really dig the extra lines on Disky’s face, and stomach hole. It reminds me of this weird french pillow case art i used to sleep on as a small kid. Lots of defined outline shapes leading towards a psychadelic hippie art thing. but hopefully not getting there completely.
At some point I should explain the chest holes. but the old idea seems so forced and weird (and unused) that maybe that’s a dead end. hmm. Anywho. I put in a quick nod to Viddy (panel 3), as if he just showed up, wondered what was going on, then left. The idea was to try and show how much better the new art looked in comparison. It wasn’t, uh, clearly better, so i blurred the shit out of viddy. FUCK HIM and his boyish charming good looks. It is a much better comparison showdown when viewed at 300 dpi. But i don’t yet have any good ideas to use 300 dpi versions. soooo. that’s weird. heh.
um. that’s all i can think of, regarding the strip above. In other news, I’ve been daydreaming a lot about making short “Zero Punctuation” style videos, concerning cultural oddities (instead of video games). Cept i didn’t want to directly rip off his simple stick figure art style. Last night it occurred to me that I could just make it as a video version of this comic strip, using the characters as commentatorosososss. Which I still find really exciting. sooo. Hopefully start doing one of those each month. Fingers cross I have the time and focus.
