INsight:
The point here is : as usual : my unique problems with telling a joke.I’m guessing I laid out how most jokes (and/or web comics) are told. But fuck. I can’t do it with a clear head.
Specifically, I watched someone read through the first crack at the first issue of vidHero last night, and was torn up to see all the gags they missed, and how the density of some of my additions to the dialogue were completely ruining the original gag.
Anywho. In this strip I thought it cosmic to have so many “ha ha”s followed by a “huh”. The original point was just going to be that it is so sad when someone only get’s a joke after an explanation. Specifically sad when you can see the humor dawn on them, because it makes it so clear how they weren’t enjoying it before. A lot of people tend to smile or chuckle, even though they apparently don’t have any idea what’s going on with the joke. what the fuck, ey? fuck fuck fuck. … Anywho. I added the Final Destination comment just to confuse this idea, and maybe offer an ambiguous alternate enjoyment for people that know how silly that movie was. It kinda changes the whole strip to be about laughing at something that wasn’t part of the joke (?). which is also sooo painful. I left it like this, because I keep thinking ambiguities are the only approach to “abstract humor” that seems to work. (it read “Final Desination was hilarious” but i changed it to “That Final Destination bit was hilarious” to further enhance confusion).
I think there’s something profound there, akin to double entendre’s and puns, that keeps me optimistic that abstract humor could be the FUTURE OF ALL SHIT!
Graphically, I didn’t do much. as usual. Originally I made an eye bleeding green/yellow background fade, but then tweaked the hue for fun (well, I always do. moreso because i know i’m retarded when it comes to color psychology). A blue hue looked better, but this made Disky stand out as this “wrong” red thing. So i switched it over to a reddish hue, hoping this might make viddy stand out as wrong. thematically this would fit the idea of the comic (that viddy is an out of place sore, in disky’s environment. like a bad comedian set adrift in an audience that doesn’t get his joke). I don’t know that this worked. i don’t think you can make blue look “wrong”. but it was the intention, so i mention.
