INsights:
A lot of modern horror movies piss me off with their insanely stupid premises. I’d just watched “Shutter” and enjoyed it – except for the scientifically stupid idea that ghosts were somehow being picked up by the silver oxide process of film development.
I’d written up several ideas for mocking various bullshit premises, and decided to just combine them into on strip, using each panel’s border to reflect the concept being presented. Ie, the first frame is supposed to be a ghost accidentally appearing the background of the photo/panel. The second frame is supposed to be ripples of water (i just stole a quick trick from the first frame of the VidHero comic book. I know it looks more like a hypnotizing swirl than water. Waterver!). The lack of border on the third is meant to represent the idea of the infinite space available inside a conceptual space. The final frame was just an attempt to work “?!” into the border.
I have this notion that ”?!” is the universal text for “WHAT the FUCK”. ie, “? the !”. I thought it kinda looked like human genome when laid out in shrunken little font size, and moved on.
The fake movie sequel titles were tacked on to try and inject little punchlines. Spent a lot of time sweating the details of each, and trying to shrink them down.
Ultimately, I think this strip failed – by having way too much to read. Should have done each one separately, so the audience could have more time to breath. But I was learning. ?
